Surat Makes Waves with National Water Award
Surat has cemented its position as a leader in urban development by winning the prestigious National Water Award 2023 for Best Urban Local Body. This accolade, which follows recent recognition for cleanliness and air quality, highlights the city’s holistic approach to sustainability. The award, presented by President Droupadi Murmu on October 22, 2024, specifically recognizes Surat’s innovative water conservation initiatives. Key among these is the successful Tertiary Treatment Plant (TTP), which treats and reuses wastewater, saving 110-115 MLD of potable water annually and generating ₹141 crore in revenue.
The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) pioneered comprehensive wastewater management, groundwater recharge systems, and rainwater harvesting. The city’s multi-pronged approach is backed by data: over 4,600 groundwater recharge systems have been installed, and 34 lakh trees planted. These efforts have yielded significant water conservation benefits, including a measurable one-foot rise in groundwater levels in specific areas.
The National Water Awards, initiated by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aim to promote water conservation awareness and recognize best practices in water sustainability. Surat’s win, alongside 37 other winners across 9 categories, directly supports the government’s vision of a “Jal Samridh Bharat” (Water-Enriched India).
